finally discover new high-end smartphones
After months of all kinds of rumors, Samsung has finally unveiled its new high-end Galaxy S23 smartphone series. Let’s discover them together.
This is a regular meeting at the beginning of the year. Samsung finally gave us an appointment earlier today to discover the new Galaxy S23, S23 + and S23 Ultra. Smartphones, we will see in the continuation of the excellent S22, S22 + and S22 Ultra, but they carry a big innovation: they are animated by Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chips and no longer by home-made Exynos models.
The screen of the Galaxy S23 Ultra is impressive
Let’s start with the latest (have?) in the new family of Samsung phones. Like its predecessor, the Galaxy S22 Ultra, this new model is very different from its smaller siblings. Indeed, it looks more like the unnamed Galaxy Note. Blame it on the S Pen, a stylus built right into its chassis, no doubt. And a certain excess weight that will please those who are looking for giantness above all in their smartphone.
This year, Samsung is pushing the walls and giving the Galaxy S23 Ultra an even more impressive display than last year. We remain on the 6.8-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X panel, which displays up to QHD + resolution (3088 x 1440 pixels, variable frequency up to 120 Hz). However, it is flatter than the previous generation and the edges are slightly thinner.
Again, there is a 12-megapixel (ƒ2.2) photo module on the screen, capable of shooting 4K at 60 frames per second.
As we wrote above, the high-end mobile phone is this time equipped with Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip. Samsung also steals the show from Xiaomi, which showcased the latest chips from the American manufacturer. A comprehensive test will tell us whether this change is happy both in terms of performance and autonomy of the smartphone. Speaking of which, we will always find a 5000mAh battery inside the mobile phone that can be charged at 45W (charger not included).
Finally, Samsung pulls out the heavy artillery for the photo. The S23 Ultra was expected to feature a 200-megapixel (1/1.3″; ƒ/1.7) wide-angle photo sensor, a 12-megapixel ultra-wide-angle (1/2.55″; ƒ/2.2), and two telephoto was done. lenses. The first is 3x zoom (70mm, 10 megapixels), the second is periscopic, allowing 10x zoom (230mm, 10 megapixels).
We expected it too, Samsung is increasing the prices of its phones this year. The Galaxy S23 Ultra will start at €1,419 (8+256GB) and can be configured with 12+512GB (€1,599) or 12+1TB (€1,839). That’s €160 more than the S22 Ultra, except Samsung is offering 256GB of primary storage this time around, compared to 128GB last year.
The Galaxy S23 and S23+ thrive on the edges
After the big S23 Ultra is gone, it will be a disappointment to discover the S23 and S23+. It must be said: the differences between these new models and the previous ones are quite small.
On the design side, there is a slight difference in the photo block. Samsung is putting the S22 island in the closet to leave the three sensors of its new mobile phones free. What brings the S23 design closer to the Ultra model. Still, technically speaking, South Korea strikes hot and cold.
We regret that no effort was made this year to stay in the picture. We find the same configuration as last year’s S22 and S22+ in the S23 and S23+ models. Namely, a 50-megapixel wide-angle (1/1.56″; ƒ/1.8), a 12-megapixel ultra-wide-angle (1/2.55″; ƒ/2.2) and a 10-megapixel telephoto lens (3x zoom; 1/ 3.94″; ƒ/2.4).
On the front, the Galaxy S23 and S23+ have a 6.1- and 6.6-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X panel, both displaying 2340 x 1080 pixels (422 and 390 dpi, respectively). In both models, we reach a scan frequency of 120 Hz and keep the central bump where the 12 megapixel camera is located.
Under the hood is the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 that should once again prove itself. A high-end chip that takes over from the Exynos processors that struggled to convince previous editions.
Finally, in terms of autonomy, we can note a slight increase in the battery capacity of the S23, which is 3,900 mAh against last year’s 3,700 mAh. Same observation for the S23+ which has 4,500 mAh to 4,700 mAh and can be charged at 45W. The Galaxy S23 remains limited at 25W.
On the price side, this year is also a cold shower, with a noticeable increase in other varieties:
- Galaxy S23: 8 GB + 128 (€959) / 256 GB (€1019)
- Galaxy S23+: 8 GB + 256 (€1219) / 512 GB (€1339)
Compared to last year, this corresponds to an increase of 50 euros for the Galaxy S23 and 100 euros for the S23+. It should also be noted that the 128 GB configuration for the latter disappears.
The Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra, S23+, and S23 will be available on February 17, 2023.
