What is the value of the Samsung Galaxy S23 chip in real life? We tested the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2

The first phone of the year equipped with Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 passed through our hands. Here’s what to get a good idea of ​​what to expect in terms of power in the 2023 flagships.

Do you know IQOO (pronounced as IQ, intelligence quotient in English)? Is it a sub-brand of the Vivo group, founded in 2019, whose smartphones are currently only released in China with a strong gaming personality?

So why are you telling our French readers about it? Imagine that one of their latest flagships, the IQOO 11, is already equipped with the latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip. The team at Vivo France has a copy and let us spend an afternoon flying it. Aside from the LTPO 4 screen or the V2 chip dedicated to photography, the phone above all gives us a good idea of ​​the chip you’ll find in all high-end phones from 2023, as well as the Samsung Galaxy S23.

Admittedly, we were able to run tests on a phone with Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, but that’s it reference design, that is, a phone assembled by Qualcomm to serve as a reference and therefore optimized for small onions. For its part, IQOO 11 is already a commercial product. Therefore, we can consider that its performance is a reliable indicator of what we can expect from this chip in real-world conditions.

The results: the new Snapdragon beats the iPhone 14 Pro

Here are our results on AnTuTu 9 and 3D Mark’s Wild Life Extreme benchmark. We chose to compare three phones with three different high-end chips. Asus Zenfone 9 with Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1, Samsung Galaxy S22 with Exynos 2200 and iPhone 14 Pro with A16 Bionic.

First observation, the new chip is everywhere ahead. We can see that it is the GPU section where it stands out, as it scores almost 200,000 points over the iPhone 14 Pro and more than 110,000 points over the Asus in the GPU section of AnTuTu 9. It comes close to 25% measuring graphics performance, which is slightly more than 2 FPS more than the iPhone 14 Pro (that’s a 10% increase) and 6 FPS more than the Asus Zenfone 9.

On the other hand, we can also express that the CPU power is not much improved. In fact, the IQOO 11 is even a few points behind these two main competitors, but still.

Good for Samsung

If you’re looking to secure yourself a Samsung in 2023, there’s a lot to be excited about. Indeed, the Galaxy S23 is expected to be configured with Snapdragon 8 Gen 2. The difference there with the Exynos 2200 is unparalleled. The score on Wild Life increases by 120%, and the overall score on AnTuTu 9 increases by almost 53%. Note that it is impossible for every Galaxy S23 not to have the same power. Indeed, Samsung is expected to equip the basic S23 with simple graphite layers, the S23 Plus is expected to have a heat pipe system, and the S23 Ultra is expected to rely on the best of the three systems, the vapor chamber.

Speaking of cooling, let’s add that the IQOO 11 was quite impressive in this regard. Benchmarks and games after two hours of chaining Genshin effect, he remained resolutely cool. So, of course, this could be a sign of a chip that manages heat better, but let’s temper our enthusiasm.

Active Genshin effect, know that the game runs smoothly at Maximum settings and a constant 60 FPS. The fluidity and comfort are simply on par with what we know from the iPhone 14 Pro. A real treat. In addition, the phone heats up less than Apple.

The IQOO 11 incorporates a fairly advanced cooling system with a 4000 mm² vapor chamber and frame that should reduce the temperature inside the device by 2°C. Don’t forget that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 suffered from major heating problems at the beginning of its marketing. This first grip assures us about the future of Snapdragon 8 Gen 2. The first tests will allow us to get to the bottom of it.
