The Darjeeling Limited follows the story of brothers Francis, Peter and Jack, who reunite for a train journey across India to visit their mother in a Himalayan nunnery. Owen Wilson, Adrien Brody and Jason Schwartzman star in this Wes Anderson classic, with Huston playing Patricia, the boys’ mother who now lives in a convent after abandoning her son. When the boys are faced with leaving her, they reconnect until Patricia finally leaves them once again. Although not a huge role, Huston manages to bring a lot to the role and shows that even though Patricia isn’t there, she still loves her children.

The film revolves around optometrist Judah (Martin Landau), who is convinced that his lover Dolores (Huston) will tell his wife about their relationship. As a result, Judah accepts his brother’s diabolical plan to solve this dilemma. Despite all this, director Cliff (Allen) has his own problems, which help lighten the film. Crimes and Misdemeanors received critical acclaim and was nominated for several Oscars. Huston’s performance earned her a British Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress.

Buffalo ’66 is a unique film revolving around Billy Brown (Vincent Gallo), a recently released convict who is afraid to go home alone to his family. Desperate to impress his parents, he kidnaps Layla (Christina Ricci) from her tap class and forces her to pretend to be his wife. Interestingly, Layla is able to bond with her parents when she never could, pushing Billy further. Huston stars as Billy’s Buffalo Bills-obsessed mother Janet, who leaves her son on the sidelines. Huston manages to portray the perfect demeanor for his role, and even though his role isn’t huge, he gives a memorable performance in the film.

One of Wes Anderson’s greatest films of all time, Life in the Water, starring Steve Zissou, follows the famous oceanographer’s quest to find and avenge the ever-elusive jaguar shark. The film failed at the box office but has since gained a following. Huston stars as Steve Zissou’s wife Elanor, who is dismissive of her relationship with Steve but eventually warms to him. Her iconic fashion choices and unique approach to life made her a memorable character among the cast.

Fun at the top
50/50 revolves around Adam Lerner (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), whose malignant tumors give him a 50/50 chance of survival. While Adam is as positive as can be, his mother and best friend Kyle (Seth Rogen) struggle to learn that a loved one will soon die. Huston, who plays Adams’ mother, is perfect as someone who only wants the best for her son, who wants him to live a long, healthy life. The film was nominated for the best film at the Oscars.

Based on the novel of the same name written by Roald Dahl, The Witches revolves around a young man who spies on a witches’ convention in a hotel where the Great Witch (Huston) reveals her grand plan to turn all the children into mice. Discovering that Luke is at the convention, they turn him into a mouse. Later, Luke is forced to defend himself with the help of his grandmother. Despite Dahl’s disapproval of the film’s departure from its source material, the film has since gained an audience with particular praise for Huston’s performance.

Morticia plays the slow game, quietly wary of the new Fester, his perfect aura of mystery. Huston’s remarkable performance earned her a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy. Some even argued that Huston’s portrayal of Morticia was better than Carolyn Jones’ original portrayal.
